BERKELEY — Cal coach Justin Wilcox sees the need for balance between embracing the Big Game and all that goes with it against a week of focused preparation for facing Stanford on Saturday. The Bears (4-6, 2-5 Pac-12) and Cardinal (3-7, 2-6) meet for the 126th time in a 3:30 p.m. kickoff at Stanford Stadium, and there remains a lot on the line for Cal.Wins at Stanford and UCLA the following week would make Cal bowl eligible for the first time since 2019. The Bears’ 42-39 victory over Washington State last Saturday snapped a four-game losing streak and kept that ambition afloat.Asked during his weekly news conference about the Big Game’s place on the Bay Area sports landscape, Wilcox quipped, “Geez, I don’t know if we have enough time to give it its due.”He will not pretend it’s just another game.“This is one of the greatest rivalries in college athletics,” he said. “I think it’s OK to talk about it, the history, The Axe, all that goes into it. I want them to appreciate how much it mea...

(KRON) -- Two orphaned mountain lion cubs have a new home at the Oakland Zoo, the zoo announced Tuesday. The kittens were found in a backyard in the Burlingame/Hillsboro area last weekend after their suspected mother was killed in a car crash on Highway 280, the zoo said. The young siblings were taken to the zoo on Tuesday where they were examined for health. "These cubs became orphans when their mother was struck by a car on a busy highway, a tragedy suffered by wildlife when safe passage across their natural territories isn't possible. We support and advocate for more wildlife crossings, such as the one opened in Santa Cruz earlier this year on Highway 17," said Nik Dehejia, Oakland Zoo's CEO. Both kittens are females that were born just 6-10 weeks ago, per the zoo. One weighs 5 pounds and the other weighs 5.5 pounds. The U.N. aid agency for Palestinian refugees said its fuel reserves in Gaza ran dry on Tuesday. The lack of fuel means relief efforts, phone and internet communications across the besieged territory will grind to a halt in the next few days, UNRWA said.Israel has refused to allow fuel shipments into Gaza following Hamas’s deadly Oct. 7 incursion into southern Israel that set off the war, saying the militant group will divert any fuel for its own use.Fighting between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants in northern Gaza has caused 200,000 people to flee south in the past 10 days, the U.N. humanitarian agency said Tuesday. More than two-thirds of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million have fled their homes since the war began.Only one hospital in the north is capable of treating patients, and another evacuated its last remaining patients and health workers. GOP senator challenges Teamsters head to a fight in a fiery exchange at a hearing

WASHINGTON (AP) — A congressional hearing devolved into an angry confrontation between a senator and a witness on Tuesday after Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma challenged Sean O’Brien, the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, to “stand your butt up” and settle longstanding differences right there in the room.Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the chairman of the Senate panel that was holding the hearing, yelled at Mullin to sit down after he challenged O’Brien to a fight. Mullin had stood up from his seat at the dais and appeared to start taking his ring off.“This is the time, this is the place,” Mullin told O’Brien after reading a series of critical tweets O’Brien had sent about him in the past. “If you want to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here.”The two men never came face to face in the hearing room. But they hurled insults at each other for around six minutes as Sanders repeatedly banged his gavel and tried to cut th...

KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Israeli military seized broader control of northern Gaza on Tuesday, including capturing the territory’s legislature building and its police headquarters, in gains that carried high symbolic value in the country’s quest to crush the ruling Hamas militant group.Meanwhile, Palestinian authorities called for a cease-fire to evacuate three dozen newborns and other patients trapped inside Gaza’s biggest hospital as Israeli forces battled Hamas in the streets just outside.Inside some of the captured buildings, soldiers held up the Israeli flag and military flags in celebration. In a nationally televised news conference, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Hamas had “lost control” of northern Gaza and that Israel made significant gains in Gaza City. But asked about the time frame for the war, Gallant said: “We’re talking about long months, not a day or two.”One Israeli commander in Gaza, identified only as Lt.
