WASHINGTON — Widespread loneliness in the U.S. poses health risks as deadly as smoking up to 15 cigarettes daily, costing the health industry billions of dollars annually, the U.S. surgeon general said Tuesday in declaring the latest public health epidemic.About half of U.S. adults say they’ve experienced loneliness, Dr. Vivek Murthy said in an 81-page report from his office.“We now know that loneliness is a common feeling that many people experience. It’s like hunger or thirst. It’s a feeling the body sends us when something we need for survival is missing,” Murthy told The Associated Press in an interview. “Millions of people in America are struggling in the shadows, and that’s not right. That’s why I issued this advisory to pull back the curtain on a struggle that too many people are experiencing.”The declaration is intended to raise awareness around loneliness but won’t unlock federal funding or programming devoted to combatting the issue.Research shows that Americans, who have ...

A budget extender was passed Monday night to ensure state workers continue to get paid."We’re almost done," said Governor Kathy Hochul. "It’s nearing its completion and I think when New Yorkers look back, they don’t care so much about the time element involved. That time element gave me the necessary time to really get signature bills and ideas over the finish line."I would say that when you take out some of the policy stuff, this checked a lot of boxes on the things that members of the assembly support. Maybe not at the levels that the members would have liked, but I would say this is probably— this might be the best non-pandemic budget I’ve seen in my 23 years in th...

After months of buildup, members of the Writers Guild of America began striking Tuesday demanding better pay and protections from television and film studios. At numerous studios around Los Angeles, New York City and elsewhere, thousands of writers walked the picket lines in support of the WGA's efforts. "It's nice to see fellow members of the guild stand up for our cause," union member Matt Oberg told KTLA. "It's rare that we see each other come out in numbers like this, so it's really fortifying to see us all together.
