CINCINNATI (AP) — Spencer Steer hit a three-run home run to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Seattle Mariners 6-3 on Monday in an interleague matchup of playoff contenders. The Reds began the day in a four-way tie for the third NL wild-card spot, and the AL-west leading Mariners are 39-18 since July 1 for the best record in the major leagues in that span. Julio Rodriguez and Mike Ford hit solo home runs for Seattle. With their pitching staff hit hard by COVID-19 and injuries, the Reds used seven pitchers on Monday. Lucas Sims (5-3) got the last out of the seventh to pick up the win and Ian Gibaut got the last out of the ninth to get his second save.Right-hander Tejay Antone made his fifth career start, first since 2020, throwing two hitless innings with three strikeouts. He returned Saturday after not pitching since 2021 following two Tommy John surgeries.Mariners starter Bryan Woo (2-4) allowed five runs, hit three batters and walked three in five innings. Column: Alex Palou dominantes IndyCar amid lawsuits and scrutiny of his career decisions

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Alex Palou wore a McLaren papaya-colored shirt at the Miami Grand Prix in May and a $1 million Richard Mille custom watch adorned his wrist.Given only to McLaren’s F1 drivers, the timepieces are a talking point among the collecting crowd. Simon Pagenaud, himself a Mille ambassador, immediately spotted the watch.“Yes, but it doesn’t work,” Palou said.“What do you mean it doesn’t work?” Pagenaud asked, popping out of his chair to seize Palou’s right arm.“It just doesn’t do anything,” Palou said with a shrug.“You know you have to wind it, right?” asked an incredulous Pagenaud, who began twisting the outer dial.Palou always has had some naivete since arriving in the United States at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was a 22-year-old Spaniard who most recently had been racing under the radar in Japan, and he never had won a championship at any level. He slipped in during the isolated “bubble” 2020 season with small Dale Coyne Racing, where Palou sec...

Justin Steele carries the Chicago Cubs to a 5-0 win with a career-best start — and puts his name firmly in the Cy Young conversation

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 09:38:00 GMT

Picking the best moment in Justin Steele’s start Monday against the San Francisco Giants poses a challenge.Maybe the 93.1 mph four-seam fastball Giants catcher Patrick Bailey whiffed on to end the seventh inning and surpass Steele’s previous best in strikeouts. Perhaps the stretch of 16 consecutive batters retired or never allowing a runner to get in scoring position.Eight shutout innings and 12 strikeouts, both career highs, convey Steele’s utter domination in the Chicago Cubs’ 5-0 win. With the victory, the Cubs (74-64) matched their 2022 win total and remained three games clear of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Cincinnati Reds for the second National League wild-card spot.In the last 20 years, only two Cubs pitchers had thrown at least eight scoreless innings with 12 or more strikeouts: Jake Arrieta (2014 and his 2015 no-hitter) and Ryan Dempster (2008). Ken Holtzman (1972) had been the lone Cubs lefty to do it. It’s a rare combination that has happened...

They are questioning whether their trust in the councilor was well placed. We understand and share these concerns.”Looking at its endorsement criteria, the committ...
