Letters: A word to start with as we work to prevent violence ‘Them’In the early 2010s, toward the end of my 30+ year career working in local public health, I was invited to take part in a meeting that I have never forgotten, all the more memorable given the dark events of recent weeks and the days to come. The meeting, part of a nationwide tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department, was with a group of public health officials from the Israeli and Palestinian Health Services. The topic of the gathering was to compare and learn from one another about effective approaches to promote individual and community health, focusing on healthy nutrition, physical activity, and avoiding tobacco and misuse of alcohol and other drugs. The first thing I remember about that day was watching out the front window as the delegations got off the van they were traveling in together; my colleague and I both remarked on how we had no idea who was Palestinian and who was Israeli. This remained true throughout most of our conversation together. The next thin...

Nuggets overcome ugly night in Memphis for 108-104 win over Grizzlies MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Memphis Grizzlies, with or without embattled star Ja Morant and injured center Steven Adams, are gritty, pesky, frisky and quite simply a pain to deal with.In the Nuggets’ first road contest of the 2023-24 season, they needed to overcome those aggravating qualities and their own sloppiness to earn a 108-104 win.The Grizzlies kept the game consistently hectic and kept Nikola Jokic in check, with two former Defensive Players of the Year (Jaren Jackson Jr. and Marcus Smart) nagging at him off-ball.With 6:05 remaining, an unsuspecting Jokic was stripped by Derrick Rose for his eighth turnover. The ensuing fast-break layup cut Denver’s lead to 95-93 and forced a Michael Malone timeout. Smart’s 15-footer less than two minutes later gave the Grizzlies a 98-97 lead. Denver had led almost the entire game.Yet even on Jokic’s uglier nights, he often is a difference-maker in winning ways. He and Jamal Murray knocked down consecutive 3-pointers for a ...

Beat goes on for San Jose Sharks as scoring drought approaches team record The San Jose Sharks were hoping for a response Friday after they were blown out the night before by the Tampa Bay Lightning. And at least from an engagement standpoint, the Sharks appeared to make some strides at PNC Arena against the Carolina Hurricanes. But that first win of the season remained elusive — as did finding the back of the net — as the Sharks allowed a Teuvo Teravainen hat trick in a 3-0 loss to the Hurricanes to drop their record this season to 0-7-1.The Sharks end their five-game road trip on Sunday against the Washington Capitals. The Sharks gave up a power play goal to Teravainen at the 6:10 mark of the first, and an even-strength marker to the Hurricanes forward with 4:50 before the intermission after a failed clearing attempt.Teravainen completed the hat trick at the 6:06 mark of the third period, a deflating goal considering the Sharks had generated some scoring chances near the end of the second period and into the third.
