VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Canadian firefighters made some progress battling blazes in a British Columbia region known for picturesque resort towns, but hundreds more raging across the province have pushed thousands from their homes and flames also threatened a provincial capital hundreds of kilometers (miles) to the north. There’s “finally a bit of a glimmer of hope,” West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Broland told a news conference of the progress being made Sunday in the Lake Okanagan region, which is known as a summer destination for families.“The weather has allowed us to make progress,” he said, adding that crews were able to conduct more traditional firefighting techniques such as putting out hot spots. More than 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) away, firefighters fought flames bearing down on Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories. The fire remained about 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the city, which was left virtually empty after nearly all of its 20,000 re...Need to leave kids home alone as the school year gets underway? Here are some tips

As the school year begins for some students in Northern Virginia, some parents may be considering leaving their child home alone before or after school for the first time.In Virginia, there are no specific rules about how old a child should be when they’re left alone. But Twana Johnson, Program Manager for Fairfax County Children, Youth and Families Division said there are child supervision guidelines. She said children should not be left alone until they are at least nine and, if you are leaving an older child alone with younger siblings, the older child should be at least 10 years old.Johnson said parents should ask the question, “Is the child ready to be left home alone, and are you the parent ready to leave the child home alone?”If an older child is left with younger siblings, Johnson said to ask: “Is that child ready to watch that younger sibling, and is that sibling ready to listen to that older child?”She said parents should consider holding a fam...Stock market today: Wall Street is holding a bit steadier after its third straight losing week

NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is mixed on Monday and holding a bit steadier after its third straight losing week amid its dismal August. The S&P 500 was up 0.4% in early trading. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 22 points, or 0.1%, at 34,478, as of 9:50 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.8% higher.Security software maker Palo Alto Networks jumped 15% for the biggest gain in the S&P 500. The California company reported better profit for the spring than analysts expected late Friday.Electric vehicle maker Tesla rose 4.4% to scrape back some of last week’s 11% loss. It struggled with other high-growth stocks last week because they’re seen as some of the hardest hit by higher interest rates, and bond yields have been swiftly rising. Besides worries about the tightening grip from the bond market, concerns about a faltering economic recovery in China have also caused markets worldwide to sway this month. The week’s main event is likely to be a speech on F...Judge blocks Georgia ban on hormone replacement therapy for transgender minors

ATLANTA (AP) — A federal judge has blocked the state of Georgia from enforcing a new law that banned doctors from starting hormone therapy for transgender people under the age of 18.In a ruling issued Sunday, U.S. District Court Judge Sarah Geraghty granted a preliminary injunction sought by the parents of several transgender children. At least 22 states have now enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and most of those states face lawsuits. The Georgia law, Senate Bill 140, still allows doctors to prescribe puberty-blocking medications, and it allows minors who are already receiving hormone therapy to continue. But the law bans any new patients under 18 from starting hormone therapy. It also bans most gender-affirming surgeries for transgender people under 18. Geraghty’s ruling did not block the surgery ban.During two days of hearings earlier this month, Geraghty heard conflicting testimony about the safety and benefits of horm...Greek coast guard rescues scores of migrants from boats drifting in the Aegean Sea

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek patrol boats in the eastern Aegean Sea on Monday rescued nearly 80 migrants trying to cross from Turkey in inflatable dinghies in two separate incidents, as the number of such dangerous journeys increases.Over the weekend, the coast guard picked up another 200 people who had left Turkey in similar boats provided by smugglers for Greece’s nearby eastern Aegean islands.A coast guard statement said 40 migrants were rescued from a drifting dinghy off the coast of Lesbos island Monday, shortly after another 36 were picked off from another flimsy vessel in the same area. All 76 were taken to a local reception center.More than 14,000 people have reached Greece by land and sea so far this year, according to United Nations figures. That’s about a tenth of the total successful Mediterranean crossings, most of which — about 104,000 — were to Italy.Arrivals in Greece for the whole of 2022 totaled 19,000. Most were people from the Middle East and Africa se...Sports on TV for Tuesday, August 22

(CNN) — Handing your baby a phone or tablet to play with may seem like a harmless solution when you’re busy, but it could quickly affect their development, a new study has found.Having anywhere from one to four hours of screen time per day at age 1 is linked with higher risks of developmental delays in communication, fine motor, problem-solving and personal and social skills by age 2, according to a study of 7,097 children published Monday in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.“It’s a really important study because it has a very large sample size of children who’ve been followed for several years,” said Dr. Jason Nagata, associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, who wasn’t involved in the study.“The study fills an important gap because it identifies specific developmental delays (in skills) such as communication and problem-solving associated with screen time,” said Nagata, noting there haven’t been many prior studies that studied this issue with sev...South Florida rapper “Gunplay” arrested on aggravated battery and child abuse charges

A South Florida rapper has been arrested on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment and child abuse. The arrest comes after an incident that unfolded on August 20, involving 44-year-old Richard Morales, known by his rap name “Gunplay” and his wife, with whom he shares a six-month-old child, at their Miami residence.According to the arrest report, the victim reported that she and Morales had returned home after dinner when a dispute arose. The victim claimed that Morales, who appeared to be highly intoxicated and engrossed in a video game on his Xbox, was making excessive noise. In an attempt to quiet him due to their sleeping baby, she asked him to lower the volume. The situation escalated, with the victim alleging that Morales turned violent by throwing glass cups and liquor bottles at her. Concerned for their baby’s safety, the victim covered the child with a blanket to shield her from flying glass shards. Morales then allegedly pick...Latest news
