Oops! Austria’s Social Democrats announce wrong winner of leadership contest

In Austria, the elections really are rigged — by incompetence. The Social Democrats (SPÖ) said they’d declared the wrong candidate as the winner of a nail-biting party election over the weekend.Instead of Hans Peter Doskozil, the populist governor of the eastern Burgenland region, leftist small-town mayor Andreas Babler will take charge of the country’s oldest party. About 600 SPÖ delegates voted at an extraordinary party convention on Saturday. Doskozil celebrated what appeared to be a clear victory with 53 percent of the vote. In fact, Babler won with 53 percent to Doskozil’s 47 percent, according to the revised tally. Exactly what led to the bizarre turn of events remained unclear as of late Monday. SPD election director Michaela Grubesa offered a confused explanation at a press conference, blaming a “technical error by a colleague with an Excel table” during the tabulation of the results. The mistake was discovered during a recount on Monday, undertaken becau...Community mourns after Franklin, NH shooting that left woman, her daughter dead, 5-year-old injured

A memorial was growing outside a home in Franklin, New Hampshire Monday a matter of days after authorities said a mother and her baby daughter were found shot to death. Officials said the pair were found on Saturday. The suspect, identified as the baby’s father, then took his own life, according to authorities. A five-year-old girl was also injured in the shooting. Now out of the hospital, the child’s aunt has created a GoFundMe for her medical needs and future college funds. “Left behind is my brave, strong, amazing niece Abrianna (Brina), who was Nicole’s oldest daughter (5),” reads the GoFundMe description. “She is expected to make a full recovery from the physical injuries inflicted. As terrible as this situation is, we are so grateful for her to still be in our lives.”While Abrianna recovers, loved ones have remained in deep mourning for 38-year-old Nicole Hughes and her 1.5-year-old daughter Ariella Bell. Autopsies have determined the pair were each shot m...Kayla Montgomery testifies in weapons trial of estranged husband, Adam Montgomery

Kayla Montgomery, the estranged wife of Adam Montgomery, took the stand Monday to testify in Adam’s trial for a series of weapons charges.Kayla previously accepted a plea deal to testify against Adam. The case linked to the current trial is separate from the death of Adam’s daughter, Harmony, who was last seen in 2019 and who Adam is accused of killing.“Is it difficult for you to be here,” Kayla was asked at one point while in court in Manchester, New Hampshire. “Yes,” she responded. Adam Montgomery has been charged with second degree murder in the apparent death of Harmony, 5. In the unrelated weapons case, prosecutors have accused Adam of stealing an assault rifle and a shotgun from a friend’s home in 2019. Kayla was not there when the incident happened, but testified Adam admitted he stole the guns from a woman named Kim and her husband, Chris. “All he said was that Kim was passed out and he...Parents of 5-year-old girl killed at Andover crosswalk speak out as they push for change and honor daughter’s legacy

The original Yankee Stadium would have turned 100 years old this season had it not been replaced in 2009 by the gargantuan, sterile replica that now bears its name. The Chicago White Sox, who arrive in the Bronx on Tuesday for an important three-game series against their longtime rivals, have been part of some memorable moments in both the new and old stadium. Here are a few of the best and worst from the Sox trips to New York over the last century:Babe’s walk-offSept. 24, 1925In an otherwise pedestrian season for Yankees great Babe Ruth, the Sultan of Swat still managed to kill the Sox. WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the House Oversight Committee plans to move forward this week with holding FBI Director Christopher Wray in contempt of Congress.Oversight Chairman Rep. James Comer said a more-than-hourlong briefing he received Monday from bureau officials about an unverified law enforcement tip against President Joe Biden does not amount to compliance with a subpoena. FBI officials came to the Capitol on Monday to brief Comer, R-Ky., and Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, the top Democrat on the panel, about a June 2020 document that purportedly relates to Biden and his family. The briefing was conducted privately in a secure space because FBI officials say the “several-page” form contains sensitive information.“The FBI again refused to hand over the unclassified record to the custody of the House Oversight Committee,” Comer told reporters after the briefing. “And we will now initiate contempt of Congress hearings this Thursday.”House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told reporter...Memorial for Las Vegas mass shooting takes shape as 5 potential designs revealed

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A series of white angel wings rise up from the earth bathed in a warm glow of light, their sweeping forms creating a long covered pathway surrounded by trees in a possible centerpiece for the memorial to modern America’s deadliest mass shooting. It’s one of five potential designs unveiled Monday for a permanent monument on the Las Vegas Strip where 58 people were shot and killed and hundreds more injured at a country music festival on Oct. 1, 2017. Two survivors later died from their gunshot wounds. The memorial honoring victims, survivors and first responders will be built at the site of the massacre. DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — The bodies of three Iowa men have been removed from the site of a collapsed six-story apartment building about a week after part of the century-old structure tumbled to the ground, the city of Davenport’s police chief announced Monday. “We don’t have any other information at this time that there are any additional people missing,” Chief Jeff Bladel said.Meanwhile, residents of the building have started filing lawsuits. One, filed Monday by Dayna Feuerbach, is accusing the city and the building’s current and former owners of knowing of the deteriorating conditions and failing to warn residents of the risk. A second action by Mildred Harrington against the building’s owner alone alleges the same.Feuerbach’s lawsuit alleges multiple counts of negligence, and both actions seek unspecified damages. “The city had warning after warning,” attorney Jeffrey Goodman, who represents Feuerbach, told The Associated Press.
