Sonoma-based couple Carey Jones and John McCarthy are no newbies to crafting cocktails. The Food & Wine columnists behind “Liquor Cabinet Roulette” and authors of “Be Your Own Bartender” have returned with a second book, “Every Cocktail Has a Twist” (Countryman Press, $25). Frogs leaped into the air and swam for cover as Paul Johnson strolled toward a stream crossing, a Jeep crawling slowly behind him. As the SUV climbed into the Griswold Hills from the San Joaquin desert, it crossed the creek another five times. Each time, Johnson, a wildlife biologist with the National Park Service, got out and shooed away dozens of frogs before the vehicle splashed through.Clear Creek, about 100 miles southeast of San Jose, is one of the few remaining strongholds of the Central Coast population of the foothill yellow-legged frog. (KRON) -- One person was arrested for firearm violations on Dec. 11, the Hercules Police Department announced Wednesday. While conducting a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Malibu on Willow Avenue at Hawthorne Drive, a Hercules PD officer said they observed the barrel of a silver and black firearm protruding from underneath a jacket on the front passenger seat.(Photos: Hercules Police Department)The driver was then detained and a search of the vehicle was conducted.According to police, the search revealed a loaded Springfield XD-M 40 pistol. According to the police investigation, the firearm was unregistered. DENVER (AP) — A federal judge has allowed the reintroduction of gray wolves in Colorado to move forward after representatives of the state's cattle industry asked for a temporary stay in the predators' release in a lawsuit.While the lawsuit will continue, the judge’s ruling allows Colorado to proceed with its plan to find, capture and transport up to 10 wolves from Oregon starting Sunday. (KTLA) — The Los Angeles Chargers on Friday made a move many had seen coming for much of this season, head coach Brandon Staley was fired.The Chargers suffered a humiliating 63-21 defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday night, the latest in a string of painful losses.ESPN's Adam Schefter, who reported the coaching change, pointed out that Staley lasted 11 months past when many thought he'd be fired after blowing a 27-0 lead to the Jacksonville Jaguars in last season's playoffs. The year before that, the Chargers lost their final game to the Raiders despite only needing a win or tie to make the playoffs.Staley worked in Denver for a short period of time as an outside linebackers coach under thenhead coach Vic Fangio. All lanes on the Palmetto Expressway were shut down Friday afternoon. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Florida Highway Patrol arrived at the scene on State Road 826, near Northwest 47th Avenue in the Miami Gardens, after receiving reports of downed power lines that blocked the lanes.7Skyforce hovered over the scene, where northbound and southbound traffic was at a standstill.
